About Our Publication
Impressions Literary and Art Magazine is compiled each year by students at Maryville College. We strive to collect works from the school's most creative minds. At the end of every school year, we publish a collection that does just that. Students, staff, and the surrounding community are free to submit in a variety of genres such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art, photography, and digital art.
History
Impressions was founded by students in 1975. The organization came out of the Communications Committee of the All-College Council (this was an administrative board including administration, faculty, staff, and student representatives) which oversaw the Highland Echo (school newspaper) and Chilhowean (a college yearbook produced from 1906-2013) and also worked with the College’s Communications Director. According to an article in the Echo, Impressions was created “with the hope that it would stimulate response in the area of the arts.” (Highland Echo, April 23, 1976, p. 3).
The third volume of Impressions begins with the statement:
“A little over two years ago some students had a dream. Their dream was to publish a magazine which captured the creative outflow of the Maryville College community. The magazine would contain poetry, prose, short stories, photographs, and art. It would be called Impressions because the magazine tried to catch the "feeling" of the campus. These same students toiled, suffered, pulled some strings and a few months later impressions came out as a supplement to the Highland Echo.”

AI Policy: Impressions functions as an outlet for writers and artists to express themselves and showcase their human creativity. As such, we do not encourage the use of AI and we will not accept writing or images that are fully or partially generated by AI. However, we do allow creators to use AI to aid their process so long as AI is not responsible for any part of the completed work. For example, AI can be used to create outlines, suggest inspiration, or help proofread and edit grammar. If you decide to use AI in any way in your work, we ask that you include a content warning in your submission that explains how AI was used.
